Japanese lamp styled lanterns, also known as and Dawn's, and I get started by bifurcating. This piece of hard maple after some quick, thickness and ER I head over to the table, saw where I rip off a whole bunch of tiny little strips and just as a quick note, I'm cutting these a little oversized about 1/32 of an inch and they will be sanded to exact thickness shortly as I was making these cuts, I realized that the heel of my push-block was a little worn out, so I decided to take the time to replace it.
Usually, I just run the push block over the joiner a few times to get a nice fresh surface, and then I glue a block of scrap wood on so doing. This makes cutting those little thin strips much safer and also much more controllable, and another thing I like to do is to use a zero clearance insert with a specially made splinter.
So when I install that little splinter piece, I make sure that it's fat and then I come back with a shoulder plane and I plane it down until it's just putting a little bit of pressure on the work piece against the table saw fence, and this really helps With both cut quality and safety, I must admit a wide belt. Sander makes this process a lot faster and a lot easier, but a hand plane and a jig work just as well.
